African Wild Dog Project
The African Wild Dog Project is dedicated to the conservation of one of Africa's rarest carnivores, the African wild dog (also known as the painted and Cape hunting dog.)
  • Where once they occurred throughout Africa and numbered hundreds of thousands, there are now fewer African wild dogs than there are cheetahs.
  • The Species Survival Commission of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) estimates that in the whole of Africa there are only 5,000 to 6,000 wild dogs in 600 to 1,000 packs. The African Wild Dog Project, through educational programs and field studies in Africa, is working to conserve these remaining groups.
  • Lions and hyenas are natural predators, and take their toll on African wild dogs. But the primary reasons for their decline are man-made: loss of habitat, illegal killing by farmers and ranchers, getting run over on roadways, and getting caught in snares.
